Blue is a Mallard duck who came to Healing HEART Sanctuary in June 2012 with Rugby, another HHS duck. Blue has a fascinating story that starts with a little girl picking up an egg at a park and bringing it home to put under a light bulb.
Sometime later, the egg hatched and Blue was born! Unfortunately, Blue has a deformed bill, wings and feet. This may have been caused from not receiving enough heat from the lamp or the little girl helping him to hatch. Ducks must push out of the egg on their own to properly hatch.
He was brought to a waterfowl rescue where they did not think he would survive his first year. Albeit sickly and stuck in a perpetually juvenile state, he survived and became known as the Peter Pan of the duck world! At the time, HHS had a blind female duck who had lost her male companion and was not doing well. Because she needed to hear a male duck’s quack, which is different from the quack of a female, Blue was the perfect companion for her. He is now known as “Little Boy Blue”.
Funny enough, once getting to HHS, Blue shifted, got better and started to mature. He is now all grown up and one of our healthiest ducks, accept for an occasional limp. Blue always looks fabulous, feathers preened and fluffed, chest high and proud! That and a slightly flat head gets him his military nickname.
